Mehemet 'Ali
Mehemet 'Ali (c. 1769-1849). Aka Mohammed 'Ali, viceroy of Egypt. Albanian born officer sent to Egypt with Turkish-Albanian force when the French invaded in 1798. Supported Egyptian rulers vs. the Mamluks; proclaimed viceroy by Albanians and the Sultan in 1805. Became insane in 1848 and was succeeded by Ibrahim Pasha, his adopted son.
