'A Pan-Anglican Washing Day', 1867. Artist: John Tenniel

'A Pan-Anglican Washing Day', 1867. The reference to Colenso relates to Bishop Colenso of Natal whose work, The Pentateuch and Book of Joshua Critically Examined, had questioned, and rejected, the established belief that Moses had been the author of the Pentateuch. It was partly through works such as Colenso's, and publications such as those of the seven authors of Essays and Reviews, that the Pan-Anglican Synod had felt a need to meet to discuss the best way of promoting the reunion of Christendom and ancillary matters to do with Church discipline and promotion of the Church's message. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 5, 1867. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
