The 61-year-old ex-President Banana has been accused of rape by his former aide-de-camp, Police Inspector Jefta Dube, who stands convicted of the murder of one of his colleagues. Sentenced 24 February to 10 years imprisonment, Dube was granted attenuating circumstances by the judge because of Banana's alleged sexual mistreatment. The accusations may have serious consequences in Zimbabwe, where President Mugabe wages an unrelenting campaign against the "perversity" of homosexuality.
