Bill Veeck Receives Trophy
(Original Caption) Players Present Trophy to Veeck. Boston, Massachusetts: Rough Rodger Hornsby was fired June 10 as manager of the St. Louis Browns, and club president Bill Veeck (center) personally apologized to the players for hiring the grizzled old "Rajah" in the first place. The players immediately whipped out a silver trophy which they had bought on a rush-order basis. Here, pitcher Ned Garver (second from left) presents the trophy to Veeck. Trophy was engraved, "For the Greatest Play since the Emancipation Proclamation." Veeck named mild-mannered Marty Marion as the team's new pilot. June 10, 1952.
