Dr. Jonas Salk and Family
(Original Caption) Polio Conqueror Plays With Sons: Ann Arbor, Michigan: Dr. Jonas Salk mends a kite with his three sons shortly before the historic University of Michigan scientific meeting at which the triumph of his vaccine over polio was announced. Dr. Salk, who had brought his family to Ann Arbor to await the results of tabulations of the nationwide test of his vaccine made last summer, also addressed the meeting. Observing the kite-mending operation is Mrs. Salk. The three Salk children are (left to right), Jonathan, five, Peter, 11, and Darrel, eight. Dr. Salk tried the vaccine on his own children before inoculating other youngsters with it. April 15, 1955.
