William Baxter
circa 1870: Scottish traveller and politician William Edward Baxter (1825 - 1890). Baxter, born in Dundee, worked at his father's counting house before developing his own company which enabled him to travel around the world. He sat in parliament as the Liberal MP for Montrose and became the Secretary to the Admiralty under Gladstone and, in 1871, Secretary of the Treasury. He resigned from this position in 1873, due to differences with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, but continued trading as a foreign merchant and publishing lectures about his travelling experiences.
