ECUADOR-GALAPAGOS-SPILL-SEAL REFUGE
Seals sit in a refuge on Santa Fe Island 24 January, 2001 after the animals were contaminated and rescued from an oil spill off San Cristobal, the most eastern of the Galapagos islands, Ecuador. The Ecuadoran oil tanker Jessica ran aground last week leaking 600 tons of fuel oil into the sea, leaving a 1,200 square km (460 square mile) slick. Marine life of Santa Fe was contaminated by the oil leaking from the crippled tanker, furthering the threat of ecological disaster in the world famous nature preserve.
