Shelley Luce, science & policy director for Heal the Bay in Santa Monica, looks at Cladophora algae
Shelley Luce, science & policy director for Heal the Bay in Santa Monica, looks at Cladophora algae found about five miles upstream from Surfrider Beach in Malibu Creek. The algae is the result of too much nutrients in the water, which depletes oxygen and destroys habitat by covering it up. Algae fed by pollutants in runoff and sewage is suffocating many California waterways, including Malibu Creek, LA River and Calleguas Creek. But solving the problem isn t easy or cheap.
