Edward Sabine
circa 1850: Sir Edward Sabine (1788-1883). British soldier and astronomer. Served as astronomer with John Ross 1818 and William Parry 1819-20 on Northwest Passage expeditions. Conducted pendulum experiments at Norway and South Africa to prove Earth's shape. Showed correlation of sunspots and magnetic anomalies 1852, president, Royal Society 1861-71.
