The Indian oil sardine (Sardinella longiceps), also known as tarli, khoira, mathi, kavalai, chaalai, washi, pedvey, padwa, and boothai, is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Sardinella. It is one of the two most important commercial fish in India (along with the mackerel). The Indian oil sardine is regionally limited and can be found primarily in the northern regions of the Indian Ocean. These fish feed on phytoplankton (diatoms) and zooplankton (copepods).
