The Little White Girl', 1864, (1935). Young woman holding a Japanese fan, wearing a wedding ring. Her reflection in the mirror looks sadder and more careworn than she appears in profile. The model was Joanna Hiffernan (circa 1843-after 1903), the painter's mistress. The setting is the house that they shared in Lindsey Row, Chelsea.
