The sculpted figure at left is Hammurabi, standing before Shamash, the sun god and 'Lord of Judgment.' The disk above and between the two figures represents a sun disk. Hammurabi was ruler of Babylon from 1792 to 1750 B.C. and is known for the set of laws called Hammurabi's Code, one of the first written law codes, that were inscribed below a similar scene on a black diorite stele that measured more than 8 feet in height.
