Protein Discovery Leads To New Hair Growth In Mice

UNDATED: This handout image shows two experimental mice in this undated photo. University of Michigan graduate student David Van Mater, who was in search of tumors, stumbled on beta-catenin, a protein involved in early development of several kinds of cancer, which also triggered changes in the hair follicle of adult mice, leading to new hair growth. Hair follicles in a control mouse (L) remained in the resting phase throughout the experiment while beta-catenin triggered changes in the hair follicles of the transgenic mouse (R) that led to new hair growth. The discovery by Van Mater, along with University of Michigan scientists Frank T. Kolligs, M.D., Andrzej A. Dlugosz, M.D., and Eric R., Fearon, M.D., Ph.D., will be published in the May 15, 2003 issue of Genes & Development. (Photo by U-M Medical School/Getty Images)
