circa 1760: Thomas Reid (1710-1796). Scottish philosopher. Founder of the 'Common Sense School' of philosophy. A Presbyterian pastor 1737-51 and professor at Aberdeen 1751-64, succeeded Adam Smith as professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow 1764-81, published 'Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man' 1785, 'Essays on the Active Powers of Man' 1788.
