Ali'iolani Hale In Honolulu
View of the statue of King Kamehameha I (by Thomas R. Gould of Boston, 1883) and the Ali'iolani Hale (1874) in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, early 1940s. Originally intended to be a royal residence the building actually served as an administrative headquarters under the Royal, Republican, Territorial, and State governments and now houses the Hawaii State Supreme Court. The name means 'House of the Heavenly King' after one of King Kamehameha V's given names. (Photo by Al Greene/Frederic Lewis/Getty Images)
