NEWPORT BEACH, CA - SEPTEMBER 12: Volunteer Sabrina Marquez, a marine biology major at Cal State Fullerton, left, helps Sara Briley, the marine restoration coordinator for the non-profit Coastkeepers, use a YSA Water quality meter in Linda Isle, part of Lower Newport Bay Friday morning. A YSA Water quality meter measures the temperature, salinity, ph and oxygen levels at various locations in the bay. ///ADDITIONAL INFO: wetlands.0922.kjs --- Photo by KEVIN SULLIVAN / Orange County Register -- 9/12/14 USGS scientists predict the Newport Bay wetlands will be all gone by 2100 if sea level rises at the mid to high levels that are forecast. Instead of wetlands with plants and animal life, there will be mudflats with no vegetation. But habitat restoration work currently in progress by Orange County Coastkeepers may buffer the wetlands and shallow water habitats enough to possibly defend against some of that sea level rise. We're going out with some Orange County Coastkeeper scientists to check out their eel grass restoration project. Once a summer, they have scuba divers collect eel grass from other beds, then they bundle it and then they plant it in new areas. We're not watching that actual work. We're just going on the boat on a survey trip to see how well the eel grass restoration sites are doing. Restoration started in 2012 and Coastkeeper has restored about 750 square meters so far. Photos of scientists, general photos of the wetlands, photos of eel grass and any wildlife we spot would all be good. We're meeting at the boat ramp in Newport Dunes. Parking is paid Newport Dunes, but if you want you can park on the street somewhere at Back Bay Drive, but that might be quite the walk. 9/12/14 (Photo by Kevin Sullivan/Digital First Media/Orange County Register via Getty Images)
