In an 18th-century room, with a colorful carpet on the floor, there is a large and half-opened chest of drawers on the left and a mantelpiece on the right, with a bust in an oval at the top. To the right of a table, on which a globe, electrostatic generator, physical instruments and papers, the scholar sits on a white lacquered chair. He is half turned to the right, looking at the viewer. He holds a quill in the right hand and a prepared fish in the left. He wears a short powdered curly wig and a black skirt with black calf trousers and stockings. To his right is a boy with in his hands a large plate depicting flowering plants: Johannes (born in Leiden 4-8-1768). On the far right is a second boy with a shell in the left hand: Samuel Ulricus (born in Leiden 2-9-1772). The oldest child wears a tail wig and a green and gold trimmed suit; the youngest child a blue hat and dress with a blue ribbon around the waist. Left in the foreground loading with naturalies and works by Gronovius. On the mantelpiece are a microscope and various natives. Under the chimney is a plant with red berries. Signed bottom left.
