Light micrograph of anthracotic pigment in a lung lymph node. Anthracotic pigment is a black material mainly composed of carbon that accumulates in the lungs after long term inhalation of polluted air, smoke, or dust particles. The pigment is picked up by macrophage cells and often deposited in lymph nodes that drain the lungs. In this image, the anthracotic pigment is seen as the many black dots within macrophages. The macrophages have rounded to oval nuclei (pale purple dots) and eosinophilic (light pink) cytoplasm). A few lymphocytes (smaller and rounder dark blue dots) are also seen.
