Brood Parasitism-bluebird nest with cowbird eggs - stock photo
Brood Parasitism--Bluebird Nest with two Cowbird Eggs and five Bluebird Eggs. The white eggs speckled with brown were laid by a Brown-headed Cowbird Molothrus ater. Cowbirds eggs are laid in the nests of songbirds and leave the foster parents to care for the young. They lay eggs in the nests of over 200 other species. Most host species raise the young. The young cow birds grow rapidly taking most of the food--they may even push the host young out of the nest. Michigan
