Close-up of horseshoe crab shell on the beach - stock photo

Horseshoe Crabs are invertebrates and can live 20 years or more. During their lifetime, they molt about 16-17 times in their first decade of life until mature. September is a common time of year to find their exoskeletons on the New Jersey beach. Horseshoe crabs molt in the fall season, leaving their old shells behind. Some of the exoskeletons have tails and legs attached, making them appear like dead ones, but most of them are not.
