Foveolar metaplasia, light micrograph - stock photo

Light micrograph of foveolar metaplasia. In the small intestine, injury or irritation can cause the lining cells to undergo foveolar metaplasia, in which the cells change into foveolar cells or the type of cells normally found in the stomach lining. In this image, foveolar cells are seen in a horizontal strip at the top in contrast to intestinal type cells which are seen in a horizontal strip at the bottom. The middle horizontal area of the image is the core of an intestinal villous which is lined by both the foveolar and intestinal type epithelial cells. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 400x when printed at 10cm
