Historical whaling boat at Kekerten Island - stock photo

A large overturned Inuit umiak made from a whalebone frame pegged and lashed together over which walrus or bearded seal-skins would be stretched. Oil, usually from seals, would be used to coat and waterproof the seams. Location: Kekerten Island, a former European whaling station settlement in the Canadian sub-arctic region. The station was abandoned in 1925. Photographed in 1999 by National Geographic contributor Pete Ryan.
