Leonard B. Smith Bridge on the Waaigat inlet (Queen Julian Bridge in the background), Willemstad, °ä³Ü°ù²¹Ã§²¹´Ç - stock photo

Willemstad, °ä³Ü°ù²¹Ã§²¹´Ç, Kingdom of the Netherlands: the Leonard B. Smith Bridge, a narrow pedestrian drawbridge in Willemstad's UNESCO-listed historic center, spans the mouth of the Waaigat inlet to connect the Punda and Scharloo neighborhoods, facilitating foot traffic between the city's  commercial districts. Inaugurated in  2007, it features a double-leaf design with each leaf extending the full bridge length while covering half its width, accented by a wooden balustrade and ornate counterweight levers resembling long-necked birds, allowing it to swing open for small vessels accessing the nearby Floating Market along Handelskade. Named for Leonard Burlington Smith (1839–1898), the 19th-century American consul and entrepreneur who engineered °ä³Ü°ù²¹Ã§²¹´Ç's inaugural pontoon bridge in 1888 to link Punda and Otrobanda, the structure honors his contributions to the island's infrastructure while offering unobstructed views of the waterfront and adjacent landmarks.
