The national flag of Montenegro features a red field with a gold border and the coat of arms of Montenegro positioned at its center. It was officially adopted on July 13, 2004, during the period when the Republic of Montenegro was part of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The specific design of the flag was standardized on September 16, 2004. Following Montenegro's independence from Serbia in 2006, the flag was retained and mandated by Article 4 of the Constitution of Montenegro, which was adopted in 2007. Thus, the flag of Montenegro consists of a red background adorned with the country's coat of arms in the center, complemented by golden borders.
