Light micrograph of Paneth cell metaplasia in inflammatory bowel disease. One of the microscopic characteristics of inflammatory bowel disease is the presence of Paneth cells in the left side of the colon, where they are normally absent. This is termed Paneth cell metaplasia. The Paneth cells are the many cells containing bright red granules, as seen in this image. They are present amongst the goblet cells (light blue) of the colonic crypts (elongated and curved structures). The crypts contain the colonic epithelial cells, which have columnar nuclei (dark blue slightly elongated dots). The space in between the crypts is the lamina propria which contains inflammatory cells (smallest and darkest blue dots). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section.
