Aerial Camera Offers Heavenly View of Sprawling Mount Koyasan Spiritual Retreat
Aerial video footage taken in Wakayama Prefecture shows Mount Koyasan, considered the spiritual center of the Shingon branch of esoteric Buddhism introduced to Japan by the monk Kukai (774-835). Chosen by Kukai, the spiritual spot located at an altitude of about 900 meters is clustered with 117 various temples and a tree-lined lane passing through about 200,000 gravestones. The complex attracts adherents and tourists alike from around the world, with up to 52 temples offering lodgings. (Kazuhiro Ichikawa)
