CHINACOTA, COLOMBIA - FEBRUARY 26: Along with big cities, small settlements have also been affected seriously by the deadly coronavirus in the world.A small town in north-eastern Colombia, Chinacota, located in the Andean Region, near to Venezuelan border, promotes environmental and cultural tourism of the country.Chinacota hosts approximately 27.000 people who are mostly makes living from tourism. The mayor of Chinacota, Jose Luis Duarte, stated that almost 50,000 people were visiting the municipality at weekends before the pandemic.Stating that the residents have been through hard times when the quarantine protocols applied in March 2020, Duarte says, “By the arrival of October, the economy became alive again in Colombia and we gradually began to invite merchants to reopen their shops with biosafety protocols as a measure.”The cultural boundaries with the Wayuu ethnic group who live in the northernmost part of Colombia and northwest Venezuela, are also a way to make money for locals of Chinacota.Workshop Director in a local handmade shop, Wendy Martinez, emphasizes that the strength of their shop comes from the Wayuu ethnic background."With pandemic, people started to buy more, sales fell at first, but people felt more secure. Our handmade backpacks are on trend and that's why we started to grow," she said.Besides the natural attractions, the town also draws attention to its richness in gastronomy and hiking trails in rural areas.
