Intensifying global warming has led to a 3 degree Celsius rise in mean temperatures in Greenland between 2007 and 2012 compared to the period from 1979 to 2000, causing an acceleration of glacial retreat and permafrost degradation and an increase in wetlands and vegetation. According to a scientific study by researchers at the University of Leeds, the total area in Greenland covered by vegetation has doubled since the 1980s and the area covered by wetlands has quadrupled.
