Over 200,000 tulips given away during National Tulip Day in the Netherlands
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - JANUARY 21: Amsterdam residents and visitors on Saturday (Jan. 21) flocked to a special garden set up in the Museumplein to as part of the "National Tulip Day" event which marks the start of the tulip season in the Netherlands.The "National Tulip Day" is held on the third Saturday of January every year in the country.Dutch Olympic champion skater Irene Schouten, whose father is also a tulip producer, is the guest of honor at this year’s event.Irene Schouten was presented with the new Dutch Pearl tulip. The flower is named for Johannes Vermeer’s painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring.The theme for this year’s National Tulip Day is “Typical Dutch.”Over 200,000 tulips of different varieties and colors will be handed out free this year, according to local media.(Footage by Selman Aksunger/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
