20 Years After Hurricane Katrina, An Uneven Recovery And New Beginnings
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - AUGUST 8: An 'Eco Bench' with sloped roof and flow-through planter to mitigate stormwater flooding stands on display on a "green block" in the 7th Ward on August 8, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Community leader and resident Dr. Angela Chalk led efforts on the block, which normally experienced flooding during storms, to install affordable initiatives such as rain barrels and rain gardens. Currently, the block is able to capture a total of 8,800 gallons of rainwater during each storm, with similar efforts happening in various other low-lying communities in New Orleans. New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region are preparing to mark the 20 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which occurred on August 29, 2005. (Footage by Mario Tama/Getty Images)
