LIMA, PERU - JANUARY 20: An oil spill in the Ventanilla Sea in the province of Callao has stained the beaches of the district area in Lima, Peru on Thursday (January 20).The spill was recorded on Saturday, January 15, during the unloading of crude oil from a ship at the La Pampilla Refinery, after strong waves reached the Peruvian coast as a result of the underwater volcanic eruption near Tonga.On Thursday the district of Ventanilla asked the government to declare an environmental emergency after the oil spill, in addition to groups of people and animalists who came to the rescue of various types of birds.An estimated 6,000 barrels of oil were spilled in this region, threatening marine wildlife, according to Peru's environmental minister, Rubén Ramírez.President Pedro Castillo along with the Minister of the Environment Rubén José Ramírez Mateo and the President of the Council of Ministers Mirtha Ester Vásquez Chuquilín, visited at one of the most affected resorts in Ventanilla after the oil spill to sign the supreme decree that declares climate interest emergency in the country in Callao, Ventanilla on Thursday (Jan. 20)The earthquake caused by the eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcano recorded a magnitude of 5.8. The eruption lasted for eight minutes and caused a 1.2-meter tsunami wave in Tonga's capital 64 kilometers away, according to the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia.
