Andrew Bailey interview about Alan Turing banknote; ENGLAND: London: EXT Andrew Bailey (Governor of the Bank of England) interview SOT (1 of 2)Q: On banknote design - I'm enormously impressed - wonderful design- It captures so much of Turing's work in one small space. - You've got the coding, the computer and perhaps what Turing is most known for us the Enigma code cracking and bombe machine.- Really packed in - very nice design - huge contribution that Turing made.Q: A worthy person to be on it?- Definitely, definitely.Q: On diversity of people on banknotes - another white man- We're flying the rainbow today. Turing was a brilliant scientist, mathematician and he was also a gay man. A gay man who was treated appallingly - committed suicide - appalling treatment - Turing is a very apt recognition of diversity. - There's a lot more to Alan Turing than just a white man. Q: Would you like to see next banknote represent someone from ethnic minority?- Definitely - I hope that our next bank note will feature somebody from an ethnic [minority] background, but Turing is a very strong recognition of diversity. - Much of the work today in artificial intelligence draws on the pioneering work that Turing did.Q: When was the last time you had a £50 note in your pocket?- It's not a normal note that people carry around. - But the number issued in circulation has gone up and is still rising though use in transactions is going down.- We think people have it as a store of value. Q: Future of £50 note - currency of corrupt elites? - It's our highest value bank note here, but in comparison to around the world, it's a lot lower. - We don't want our bank notes to be the source of criminal activity.
