Drone captures grain harvest in Russia’s Ural region amid war in Ukraine

ORENBURG, RUSSIA - OCTOBER 5: As the energy and food crisis continue to affect many countries across the world after Russia-Ukraine war, Russian farmers harvested grain in the Ural region this week.Anadolu Agency Video News (AAVN) drone captured the wheat harvest by combine harvesters in Orenburg on Wednesday (Oct. 5).The grain planted in spring is harvested in autumn in the Urals due to seasonal conditions and climatic characteristics. The Urals is a geographical region located around the Ural Mountains, between the East European and West Siberian plains.“The grain harvest in Russia may grow by 5 mln metric tons annually thanks to its new regions,” said TASS News Agency, quoting Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev.Russia’s grain exports may total from 50 to 60 mln tonnes in 2022-2023 agriculture year, said the agency, adding that 80 mln tonnes of grain are required for domestic consumption.Russia is the world’s largest wheat exporter, supplying it mainly to Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Its crop is dominated by winter wheat as Russian farmers prefer to plant winter wheat over spring wheat as it is much higher yielding and is generally less susceptible to adverse summer weather. Accordingly, winter wheat typically makes up around 70pc of the total area planted to wheat. Last August, fellow consultancy Sovecon raised its forecast for Russia’s 2022 wheat crop to 94.7 million tonnes from 90.9 million tonnes.
