Black kites (Milvus migrans) perching on coast Close shot/Shiretoko Peninsula is the most southerly place in the Northern Hemisphere that has drift ice. The plentiful plankton brought by the ice supports rich ecosystems on both sea and land. Shiretoko is a designated World Heritage site for the rare quality of its natural environment. The marine and wildlife include salmon and trout, the Blakiston's fish-owl (Bubo blakistoni), the great egret, brown bears and Ezo deer. The peninsula has primeval and other forest ecosystems.
