Founded 200 years ago, Bogor Botanical Gardens is one of the oldest botanical garden in Asia, representing not only Indonesia's rich botanical diversity, but also other places. Its collection contains 13,983 different kinds of trees and plants of various origin. The garden has been playing important role such as supporting the palm oil industry need of palm oil tree seeds (South East Asia is a major producer of palm oil in the world). The Garden also played major role in the introduction of Cinchona trees to Java which would ultimately make the island the largest producer of quinine bark for malaria treatment at that time.
