Kevin Spacey: But I don’t do films to proselytize a particular point of view. I think it’s an issue that I’ve grappled with. I played Clarence Darrow a number of years ago, so I got a chance to lumber around in the ideas of somebody who was clearly opposed to it, fought on behalf of his clients, and you could not read a more eloquent cry to stop killing by the state than his summations at the end of his trials. But at the same time I’ve never had a family member of mine murdered, I’ve absolutely no idea what that must feel like and how grappling with that and a sense of justice, and a sense of wanting some, whether it’s retribution or whatever. And I think we have to pay attention to that side of it as well. There’s just as much passion and emotion there. But the question does become: Is the system flawed? Does it ever really give people a sense of justice? It’s an enormously expensive process, it’s up to about five million dollars per inmate in just the state of Texas. And don’t we think that that money can be used for a whole lot better things across this country? So both sides I grapple with and I sort of huddle somewhere in the middle.
