Congressman Thompson notes Americans prioritize protecting Social Security as Republicans cancel town halls at committee markup

California Congressman Mike Thompson says during House Ways and Means Committee consideration of a resolution of inquiry that would request the Trump Administration to provide information to Congress about Social Security Administration operations and Department of Government Efficiency access to the Social Security Administration that he understood why Republican colleagues canceled their town halls and refused to answer questions or bring witnesses in because they knew their actions were wildly unpopular, citing that 87 percent of Americans believed supporting Social Security should be a top priority for Congress, and argued the American public deserved and demanded to know what the Administration planned to do with Social Security, questioning why Republican colleagues were not interested in voting to ensure transparency through the resolution. The measure was later ordered adversely reported to the House in a partyline 24-18 vote.
