The salt layer is approximately 2 to 20 meters thick. Its total area is 5,856 square kilometers. It is the largest salt lake in China and the second largest in the world. It formed several hundred million years ago due to the gradual crystallization of the high-concentration brine in the lake.Chalhan Salt Lake is a large inland comprehensive salt lake mainly containing potassium salts, along with various other minerals such as magnesium, sodium, lithium, boron, iodine, chlorine, bromine, rubidium, and cesium. Among them, the reserves of potassium, magnesium, and lithium rank first in China, and their potential economic value is incalculable. It has extremely rich potassium and magnesium salt resources, with reserves of 50 billion tons, making it the main production area of potassium and magnesium salts in China, sufficient to supply food for 6 billion people worldwide for 1,000 years.The Chalhan Salt Lake Scenic Area was opened to the public in 2019 and was designated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
