BarackÊObamaÊtalks after signing in a new law
Close Up of PresidentÊBarackÊObamaÊmaking remarks after he signs into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This act expands the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. ObamaÊsays, "Through conflict, andÊtumult, through theÊmorass ofÊhatredÊandÊprejudice throughÊperiods ofÊdivisionÊand discord, we have endured, and grown stronger, andÊfairerÊand freer. And at every turn we've made progress not only byÊchangingÊlaws but by changing hearts by our willingness to walk inÊanother'sÊshoes by ourÊcapacityÊto love and accept even in the face of rage and bigotry."
