Interview with U.S. Senator Howard Baker
Co-host Linda Wertheimer comments to U.S. Senator Howard Baker (R-TN); Wetheimer: "The other side of your majority shows a few signs, every once in while, of trying to break away. Senator [Robert] Packwood said if the Republican Party continues in its present course, it will have to be all white, all male, all middle class..." Baker notes he has mediated intro-party squabbles before. However, the situation has been "mollified" and Packwood and the White House are working together. Wertheimer: "Are there room for people like Bob Packwood, like Lowell Weicker, in the party?" Baker believes so, that it's essential that each party have a broad base that can have a wide variety of viewpoints. He believes that without these viewpoints, and resolving issues within a party, it is possible to have "wrenching changes" like in England.
