A small, hand-built fishing boat rests along a tropical shoreline, constructed from salvaged polystyrene foam, discarded plastic waste, ghost fishing nets, and reclaimed driftwood. Built by indigenous fishing communities, this improvised vessel reflects low-cost innovation driven by economic necessity and environmental awareness. By repurposing marine debris collected during coastal clean-ups, the boat supports subsistence and small-scale fishing while reducing shoreline pollution. This adaptive approach highlights how marginalised coastal communities transform waste into functional assets, reinforcing livelihoods, sustainable fishing practices, and grassroots coastal conservation in resource-limited regions of Southeast Asia.
