Colombian disabled youth wins special award in Silleteros parade

SANTA ELENA, COLOMBIA - OCTOBER 22: A Colombian young man continuing his life on a wheelchair due to an accident worked hard despite all the difficulties and won a special award in the Flowers Festival in Medellin.Juan David Gallego Atehortua, 24, was involved in a cycling accident two years ago, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.Despite all the difficulties, Atehortua has never given up his passion that made him happy and participated in Medellin's annual flower festival even in his wheelchair.“One year and eight months ago, I had an accident in an extreme sport, which is called as downhill mountain biking, that caused paraplegia at t4 level in my legs. But, this has never prevented me to continue the Silletera culture, which I liked,” he saidAtehortua said he started his design at the hospital and at that time his design was not even in the competition categories.“As a matter of fact, in the hospital, I made the decision to design a Silleta that is adapted to a wheelchair. It was not in the clauses of the Silleteros but I took the risk. And now I am the founder of this category. I reduced mobility of the Silletera culture with an artistic silleta,” he said.Before the unfortunate accident, the determined young man had won the junior category in the same competition and in 2019, he came very close to victory by placing fourth in the artistic category.This year, he participated in the competition on a wheelchair with his new design silleta weighing approximately 170 kilograms and received the special prize.l(Footage by Tatiana Nino/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
