This species, a member of the family Accipitridae, is about 55 cm in height and has wingspan of about 155 cm. It is found across southern and eastern Asia. In Japan, it is a resident species on Iriomote and Ishigaki islands in Okinawa Prefecture. This bird inhabits forests and wetlands in low-lying and mountainous area, as well as farmlands, pastures, and mangroves. It preys on small mammals, snakes and other reptiles, as well as crabs and other types of crustaceans. During the breeding season, its call can be heard from the forests where the bird tends to conceal itself. It is a protected species in Japan.
