JAKARTA, INDONESIA - MARCH 26: Dozens of dogs barked simultaneously as Hesti Sutrisno, 41, better known as Hesti, opened the fence at her house, which has turned into a dog shelter, in the Tenjolaya area of Bogor Regency in Indonesia’s West Java province. Hesti, who wears burka or niqab, looked so close with all her 70 dogs, an unusual sight of Muslim women in the country, where most of them avoid the animal as it is considered unclean or impure. Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Monday, Hesti said she was afraid of dogs and could never dare to pet or feed them, but her fear vanished when she saw a stray dog scavenging a pile of trash for food back in 2015. Feeling bad for letting the dog strayed on the street, she decided to take it home and take care of it. She named him John, “At first, I was afraid to feed it, but my friend convinced me not to be afraid,” she said. Hesti said her affection for dogs continued to grow over time, and she started to welcome more stray or abandoned dogs in her house. The mother of two said she finds happiness while taking care of dogs, “even more when I see them being healthier and cleaner after receiving treatment from me.” She said the cost for dog food and health treatment is covered by selling crackers and funds from donors. Hesti said taking care of 70 dogs is nothing easy, especially as a Muslim, who is advised to avoid the animal as it is traditionally seen as impure.
