NEW YORK, NEW YORK – MARCH 12: During a Q and A Robin Bramwell-Stewart, Deputy Director of Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals with Port Authority, talks about her agencies effort to crack down on “ghost plates” as Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams announce a multi-agency city-state task force dedicated to identifying and removing so-called “ghost cars” on March 12, 2024 in New York City. The task force is targeting ghost vehicles, ghost cars and ghost bikes who attempt to alter the license plate to avoid traffic cameras and toll readers. Because of their fake or altered license plates, the cars are virtually untraceable by traffic cameras and toll readers. Members of the task force will be assigned to screen cars with paper license plates at the bridges and tunnels that cross the five boroughs. Governor Hochul stated that as part of her executive budget plan, legislation intends to stiffen fines and penalties for drivers caught using tampered or counterfeit license plates, as well as for individuals who sell or distribute covers to hide license plates. Joining Gov. Hochul and Mayor Adams where Police Commissioner Edward Caban, New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda and MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber.
