Ed Miliband speech on govt betraying young people; Ed Miliband speech continued SOTI'd like to start by telling you what the promise of Britain has meant to me and my family.My parents came to this country before and after the second world war as refugees My dad and grandfather fled to Britain from Belgium in 1940, just as the Nazis were about to invade.He went to night school, navy and university It was the opportunity to go to night school, and then University that enabled my Dad, with my Mum, to build a secure and stable upbringing for me and my brother.And then I went to my local comprehensive school plus the support of my parents that allowed me to take full advantage of the opportunities available in Britain.My dad used to talk about the opportunities Britain had provided him and fact he was able to pass on those opportunities to me and brother David It is a long way from a family of refugees to their son being leader of the Labour Party.It was possible because of opportunities this country provided as well as upbringing my parents gave me Reason I'm in politics today is because I want to do my bit to make sure that promise of progress for next generation can be passed onLook around at challenges young people today faceIt goes beyond actions of one govt We all know the questions we have about our kids How are they going to find a good job?We all know Britain offers good jobs for those who want to make it to the top.But for too many, the jobs they find are low paid and without the security their parents enjoyed. We worry about those jobs and future for our childrenWorry about their chances of getting on the housing ladder The average age at which young couples can afford to buy a house is 37 unless their parents can help them out.It says something about chances in past of being able to buy or rent your own homeAnd it's not just about jobs and housing, it is about the quality of life as wellWhen I think about my chil...
