Employees of Argentina's closed zoo with 300 animals, work every day in hope of reopening
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - MARCH 16: Employees at the Lujan Zoo, which has been closed due to some allegations and still home to hundreds of animals, work every day taking care of the animals in the hope of reopening. The Lujan Zoo, operating for 29 years, housed over 400 animals rescued from circuses, trafficking, and private collections.Visitors could interact with big cats, a unique feature. The pandemic hit hard, halting ticket sales and leading to financial woes.Amid allegations of abuse and trafficking, the zoo closed, leaving animals neglected.Despite efforts by the owner and a volunteer, maintaining the animals is challenging. With dwindling resources, urgent solutions are needed for the remaining 300 animals."Sometimes the animals are hungry, so we give them a little something, a cookie or something like that. Just to be safe, but it would be good if it reopens, at least so they can see people, kids, children, and it's very nice, but I want it to be open at any time,” said construction worker Sindulfo Roman.Community members have rallied to provide food, but a sustainable solution is required. The owner of the zoo and the employee are in charge of maintaining the animals that are still in the cages as best they can in the hope of being able to reopen, however it is a lot of work to do and the animals cannot wait. The monthly expenses are millionaires, which has led the owner to get rid of his collection of vehicles, including a classic car that belonged to the Argentine tango icon Carlos Gardel."Well, there were some savings. But the savings ran out. And among those, we had the collection of agricultural machinery, steam machinery, old cars, and the largest collection of old trucks in South America. Among them, the SNOCAD from the Argentine Antarctica expedition was sold in order to continue funding the Lujan Zoo,” said agricultural technician and worker of zoo Diego Masolo.
