Eric Lubbock MP on Timothy Evans case, UK; 1965
Eric Lubbock, Liberal Member of Parliament for Orpington, talks about the possibility of a fresh enquiry into the death of Timothy Evans - Evans had lived in a different flat in the same house as John Christie - both had been convicted and hanged as murderers, but Evans was later thought to be innocent. Lubbock is answering the question, 'This man was executed 15 years ago - what good can come out of a fresh enquiry?'. He says, 'Well there's a great deal of evidence, which has been produced since the case, including... Christie's confession to the murder of Mrs. Evans, which shows that [Evans] was wrongfully convicted and eminent lawyers, such as Lord Birkett, have said that if this evidence had been available to the jury at the time, that it was impossible for Mr. Evans to have been found guilty. And we think, therefore, that this fresh enquiry should be held, and that if, as we anticipate, it finds that he would not have been found guilty, then a declaration of his innocence must be made by the home secretary.'
