Measuring about 16.5 centimeters, the screech owl is undoubtedly one of the smallest owls in the world. It has two plumage colorations, like other owls. It weighs about 63 grams.It feeds on other birds, such as sparrows, tanagers and, sporadically, on hummingbirds, frogs, lizards and small snakes. Apparently generalist, taking advantage of prey that is more available according to the region, season and time of day. It hunts from a high perch, launching itself into a very fast flight to capture prey with its talons. Quite aggressive for its size, it even shoots down prey up to 4 times its own size. When spotted by other birds, it is immediately surrounded and “denounced� with hooting and special flights.
