Cyborg-type Robot Helps Patients Relearn Walking Skills in Ibaraki Prefecture Hospital
Footage taken inside the Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences Hospital in Ami, Ibaraki Prefecture, shows the wearable cyborg-type robot HAL being used to train a wheelchair-bound patient how to walk again. Video was shot on February 22, 2017, Japan. Developed by Cyberdyne Inc., a venture project originating from Tsukuba University in the prefecture, HAL relies on sensors attached to the wearer’s skin to detect faint electric signals from the brain to the muscles and mechanically assists in performing the intended motion. HAL is intended to serve as a rehabilitation aid for sufferers of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases.
